The Reds are flying from Perth to Sydney and are requesting a ‘Ballymore bubble’ to prepare for the Super Rugby AU grand final.

The Queensland Reds are flying from Perth to Sydney today and are requesting to operate in a ‘Ballymore bubble’ to best prepare for the Super Rugby AU grand final at Suncorp Stadium on May 8.

The Reds suffered their first loss of the season on Friday night, a 30-27 stunner that fired the Western Force into their first ever finals match.

The game was played just before Perth entered a three-day lockdown, starting at midnight last night, but the Reds have chartered a flight to Sydney today as they continue conversations with the Queensland Government about their “safe return” to Brisbane.

“First and foremost, protecting the health and safety of our staff, players and community is an absolute priority,” Queensland Rugby Union chief executive David Hanham said.

“In consultation with the Queensland Health Department, the QRU is in the process of submitting a request to activate the same successful model employed last year where the Reds playing squad and team staff were in home quarantine and a bubble at Ballymore.

“This is to ensure the team can continue training preparations ahead of their Super Rugby AU grand final… which is still going ahead as planned.

“In the interim, the Reds will fly to Sydney today on a charter flight via the QRU’s commercial airlines partner Alliance Airlines, as the team awaits the submission process to be completed.”

The minor premier Reds will have next weekend off as they await the winner from the Brumbies vs Force qualifying final in Canberra on Saturday.

“As (coach) Brad (Thorn) and the team has shown before, they will continue to embrace and adapt to the challenges faced, as their focus remains on a strong preparation for the grand final,” Hanham said.
