Brisbane have thrown an NRL lifeline to former Manly and Newcastle hooker Danny Levi, signing him for the rest of the 2021 season.

The 25-year-old has had a strong start to the Queensland Cup season with his Norths Devils yet to lose a game.

“We have signed Danny to give us some much-needed depth in the hooking position behind Jake Turpin who has been very good for us to start the season,” coach Kevin Walters said.

How Kevin Walters can improve as Broncos coach

“We are fortunate to be able to secure a player of Danny’s quality and experience, and he has been playing well at Norths alongside a number of Broncos-listed players who have spoken highly of him.”

It’s the second time in the past few days that the Broncos have dipped into the Q-Cup pool for a signing, with Karmichael Hunt back into the fold on a train and trial deal.

“This is an example of our affiliate club relationship working really well and allowing the best talent to flow back through to the highest level of the game,” Walters said.

“We look forward to Danny joining the squad for the remainder of the season and playing his part in helping us continue to improve.”

Levi will look to provide some spark off the bench, running behind an improved Broncos pack who gave a good account of themselves in a close loss to Penrith last week.

“We had a crack, but I’m actually disappointed more than anything,” Walters said post-match.

“We were in it and in those last 15 minutes if we execute things a bit better we win the game.

“There’s a lot there to take out of it that was good, but this club is about winning and that’s our third or fourth loss in a row. There were certainly some better moments from us, particularly in the first half I thought we were really good in what we were doing.

“In the second half we just lost our way a little bit and they were a bit too good in the end.”
