Broncos coach Kevin Walters has turned the heat up on Anthony Milford as the star plays for a new contract.

This year is meant to be Anthony Milford‘s time to shine.

So far, he is failing to do that, according to his coach.

The Brisbane Broncos‘ highest paid player is off contract at season’s end, and Kevin Walters believes Milford has not done his contract renewal hopes any favours.

“You’d have to say no,” was Walters’ response when asked if he’d seen enough from his five-eighth in the opening month to warrant a new contract.

The Broncos are battling with one win from four games, and Walters’ rebuild at Red Hill is off to the rocky beginning many experts had predicted.

Those same pundits labelled Milford as the man who needed to step up to help the Broncos climb back to the NRL summit.

With the club under pressure from rivals to re-sign a host of young stars, Milford’s contract discussions are right down the priority list.

“That’s a work in progress,” said Walters.

“Anthony needs to be playing better, but I am extremely confident we can get the best out of Anthony Milford.”

Despite the attraction of Rabbitohs halfback Adam Reynolds expected to hit the open market in coming weeks, Milford could face his biggest challenge internally.

Boom centre Kotoni Staggs is believed to be enticed by the proposition of playing in the famous Broncos No.6 jersey, as he weighs up whether to remain at Red Hill or chase bigger money at a rival club.

“We’re really keen to hang on to the services of Kotoni Staggs,” Walters said.

“He’s a player we believe has a really strong future and a bright future here at the Broncos.

“I’m sure he could play in the back-row for us, he could play in the halves for us and he could play in the centres for us.

“But right now the focus is retaining the services of Kotoni and then we’ll place him in (one of) those positions.”

Walters shot down suggestions Brisbane could sign Reynolds to add experience to the club’s problem area halves. The Rabbitohs’ captain can put forward an irresistible audition by leading Souths to victory over the Broncos tomorrow night.
