Virat Kohli and Ben Stokes have gone face to face in a heated exchange in the opening morning of the fourth Test.

The much-anticipated fourth Test between India and England has begun with some fireworks with Virat Kohli and Ben Stokes involved in a heated confrontation.

After England won the toss and elected to bat first, the Indian captain had to be separated from the star all-rounder by the field umpires after a back-and-forth.

The incident occurred after the 13th over England’s innings, when Stokes took exception to a bouncer bowled by Indian paceman Mohamed Siraj.

Stokes fired some verbals in the direction of Siraj, words which Kohli took exception to as he intervened in Stokes and teammate Jonny Bairstow’s chat in between overs.

“Both are fierce competitors. Virat choosing to go and have a chat with with the two batsmen, it’s not really up to the fielders to go into the batsmen’s conversation when they’re out in the middle,” ex-England spinner Graeme Swann said on commentary.

“Just let them get on with it, you get on with your game.”

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar said the the confrontation had the potential to knock Stokes off his game.

“This actually works in the fielding side’s favour because the batsman’s concentration is gone,” he said.

“At this critical point in time, with this discussion between Stokes and the Indian captain, nothing will happen to Virat Kohli for the simple reason that he’s fielding.

“As a batsman, if you’ve lost your concentration, it sort of lingers in your mind as you’re facing up to the next ball and you’re not fully focused and concentrating on the ball.”

The fourth Test has massive implications on the World Test Championship Final, with Australia needing an England victory to book a spot in the decider.
