A number of BBL stars will take on multi-million dollar IPL contracts, while the news for Steve Smith isn’t too pleasing.

BBL stars Jhye Richardson, Riley Meredith and Glenn Maxwell will take on multi-million dollar IPL contracts, while the news for Steve Smith isn’t too pleasing with the former Australian captain set to cop a $2 million loss from last year’s deal.

Smith, who last year was retained on a $2.5 million contract with the Rajasthan Royals, was the first player sold at Thursday’s IPL auction after Ricky Ponting’s Delhi Capitals snatched up the Australian batsman for just $A389,000.

The 31-year-old Smith last year scored 311 runs at an average of 25.91 through 14 games, which was well down from 2019’s average of 39.87 with the bat.

But the news for a number of other Aussies was much better after Richardson, last season’s BBL leading wickettaker, went for $2.48m to the Kings XI Punjab.

While Maxwell was also sold for a similar price, but to Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore for $2.52m.

24-year-old Meredith, who played for the Hobart Hurricanes last BBL season, was also auctioned for a monster price, with the Kings XI Punjab paying $1.4m.

Nathan Coulter-Nile and Dan Christian also received major paydays, after being picked up for $885,000 and $850,000, respectively. Coulter-Nile will play for the Mumbai Indians, while Christian will turn out for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The other Australians sold during the IPL auction were Moises Henriques (Kings XI Punjab, $744,000) and Ben Cutting (Kolkata Knight Riders, $133,00), but not all Australians were as lucky, including ODI skipper Aaron Finch, who was left unsold.
