After claiming the opening two sets comfortably, Bolt was forced to hold off a fightback from his Slovakian opponent who found a way to send the match to a fourth set. Fortunately, Bolt held his nerve in the fourth set.

The 28-year-old now faces a big test on Wednesday as he gets ready to meet either world No.19 Grigor Dimitrov or 2014 US Open champ Marin Cilic, who face-off later today.

“It’s amazing [being back],” he said after the match.

“I’ve had some great memories here in the past. To come out here today and get the first round win under my belt, I’m just over the moon.

“It’s been a bit of a chaotic last few months. The preparation for everyone hasn’t been ideal.

“I’m just happy I’m playing good tennis.”

John Millman

In other matches, Aussie fan favourite John Millman was unable to advance past the first round of the Australian Open for the first time since 2015 after losing in a five-set thriller to world No.80 Corentin Moutet.

The Australian held a two-sets-to-one lead but Frenchman Moutet stormed back to rock the vocal Court 3 crowd with an upset 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 3-6 6-2 6-3 victory.
