Chris Gayle, the self styled ‘Universe Boss’, equalled his own world record for the fastest half century by belting an outrageous 84 not out from 22 balls in the Abu Dhabi T10 league.
Batting for Team Abu Dhabi against the Maratha Arabians, Gayle at one stage plundered 11 consecutive boundaries with a sequence that read: 44466664646.
The 41-year-old West Indies gun for hire reached his 50 off just 12 balls – the same amount of deliveries as his world record T20 innings for the Melbourne Renegades in a 2016 Big Bash League game.
Before the blitzkrieg, Gayle had scored just 20 runs in 21 balls across four Abu Dhabi T10 matches.
“It’s a good feeling. I wasn’t getting any runs, I wasn’t getting a start but this is T10 cricket and you have to go from ball one,” Gayle said.
“Luckily today I had a bit of momentum and it paid off.”
Gayle praised Abu Dhabi coach Kumar Sangakkara for inspiring his whirlwind knock, as Abu Dhabi chased down the Arabians total of 98 in just 5.3 overs.
“Before batting, Sangakkara — I have to give him a bit of credit — he came to me and he saw something within my batting and he compared it with the IPL and the T10.
“He was like, ‘Be sharper, be ready, be more alert’ and that’s what happened, that’s what I did.
“We need a little bit of a pep talk sometimes.
“We never stop learning. Sanga — you’re the man, you’re a legend.”
