Significance of 3D Printing Pen

Imagination and originality have always been paramount to the process of creation. For a creative soul, nothing can be more satiating than transforming their ideas into something tangible. 3D printing opens new doors to empower an individual and shape his/her imagination thus bringing them closer to the actual manufacturing process. It makes technology available to those who need it without much costs incurred. As kids, it was always fascinating to switch from pencil to pen and now in this era of technological advancement let’s go one step further to use the 3D printing pen. If you hold a creative insight, this is going to be your favorite tool! Just imagine creating full life 3D forms simply by drawing them. Don’t think of it as some complicated tool, using a 3D printing pen is as easy as using a normal pen or pencil, that too in different ways. Now that’s a dream come true, isn’t it?

3D pens look attractive and work almost on the principle of the glue gun. It uses plastic filament in place of ink and has a built-in fan and electric plug. When powered, it uses heat to melt the plastic filaments and based on the chosen speed, extrudes melted plastic into any shape or design. The fan prevents overheating issues and the speed controller adjusts the rate of plastic flow. Only with a few precautions and following the terms of use, you can repair stuff, personalize items and get your imagination in full life form.

Another feature of the 3D printing pens today is the ability to switch between ABS and PLA filaments, the two thermoplastics most commonly used for 3D printing. PLA filaments are eco-friendly with low melting temperatures and a bigger transition temperature which makes it stick well to surfaces. ABS is stronger and oil based with a high melting temperature but a smaller transition temperature. ABS filaments are expensive than PLA filaments although PLA filaments are biodegradable. A 3D pen produces refined three-dimensional shapes which can draw in various colors on surfaces or in the air without using computers or software. Several 3D printing pens are available like 3Doodler, LIX Pen UV, 7TECH and many more based on user’s purpose. 3Dexter has launched its own 3D pen, ‘Fiddler’ that lets you fiddle with your imagination and create life forms using PLA filament with unique nozzle protection. It comes with a USB connection and portable power charger. This human engineering designed pen is perfect for budding creators and students.

Possibilities of creation are limitless with 3D printing pens and these are essentially a category of devices that have appeared due to burgeoning interest over the past few years in the consumer-oriented low cost 3D printers. It is a very simplified version of a 3D printer in a hand-held format or a rather complex version for a glue gun. Hence, the crowdfunding campaigns for such products are great and the response they get is huge. Many similar devices and replicas of popular 3D pens are bound to be seen in the upcoming years till the user interest in this field continues to grow. However, 3D printing pens are not a complete replacement or alterative to 3D printers. They work similarly, cost much less and give great results without hassles but 3D printing pens are still restricted in scope and should be considered as an art tool and not a manufacturing device. Their target users and applications are different. 3D printers are used to replicate virtual objects with great precision and accuracy while 3D printing pens is to satisfy the creative bunch that cares more about the freedom and innovation than precision. This justifies the fact that 3D printing pens are generally more in demand as compared to even the cheapest of the 3D printers and that makes them suitable for a lot of people that just like cool gadgets, but have no idea what they will use it for. As a result, having some skills or at least a rough idea as to what and why you may be using such a device definitely helps. Companies claim that you do not need prior experience or knowledge to use a 3D printing pen. This can be a bit misleading, you may not require it, but it’s still advisable to spend some time to get acquainted with the product before using it for greater purposes. Thus, the significance of 3D printing pens is not only due to its performance and features but also because of its popularity and convenience. However, no matter how popular they get, 3D printing pens and 3D printers shall always remain separate entities and will have their unique applications of creating simple objects and replicating high end projects with precision, respectively.
